Mary Mahoney
Mary Mahoney was the first
African-American graduate nurse in the United States. As such, she was
a true pioneer and a heroine of uncommon dedication and determination.
Weighing scarcely 90 pounds, she was a bundle of energy who worked 16
hours a day, seven days a week. The American Nurses Association each
year gives the Mary Mahoney Award for outstanding contributions to
intergroup relations.
